A Personal Journey Through One of Britain's Most Fascinating Underground Scenes By TimeLord Michalis (Compiled during early August, 2026)

Prologue

I have to make one thing clear from the very beginning: I don't live in Brighton. In fact, I have never even been there. I know very little about the city's history, its venues, or the everyday life that makes this place what it is. Yet, over the past few years, one thing has become impossible for me to ignore.

Every now and then, I would discover another remarkable psych-related band. I would play the record, fall in love with the music, check where they came from... and there it was again: Brighton.

At first, I thought it was pure coincidence. Two bands? Fair enough. Three? Still possible. But after discovering eight, nine, or even more outstanding groups from the same corner of southern England, I began to wonder whether something much bigger was happening beneath the surface. Was Brighton quietly nurturing one of the most exciting underground Psych communities of the 21st century?

Brighton's relationship with alternative culture, however, did not begin with the current generation of psychedelic explorers. Although the city never developed a clearly defined '60s psychedelic movement comparable to London, Canterbury or other legendary British scenes, it has long been associated with artistic freedom, experimentation and a strong underground spirit. During the second half of the 1960s, bands such as Mike Stuart Span and their later incarnation Leviathan hinted at the city's early connection with Britain's emerging psychedelic and progressive underground. From those pioneering days to the space-rock explorations of Mandragora in the 1980s, and later to the countless independent artists who followed, Brighton gradually became a place where musicians could experiment without boundaries. Perhaps the current Psych wave is not a sudden explosion, but rather the latest chapter of a much older tradition of creativity, curiosity and non-conformity.

This article is not intended to be a definitive history of the Brighton scene. Instead, it is the diary of a record collector, radio producer and lifelong psychedelic obsessive who kept following the same musical trail until it eventually led across the English Channel. Over the following pages, we will explore a selection of bands that, despite their very different personalities, share the same adventurous spirit, DIY mentality and refusal to accept musical boundaries. Some lean towards Garage Rock, others embrace Krautrock, Jazz, Progressive Rock, Heavy Psych, Space Rock or Surf Rock, yet together they contribute to a scene that remains vibrant, creative and refreshingly unpredictable.

So... is Brighton really the Promised Land of contemporary Psychedelia?

I honestly don't know.

But after listening to all these bands, I certainly believe the question deserves to be asked…

Paradise 9
One of the earliest architects of Brighton's modern Psych underground

If there is a starting point for this journey through Brighton's modern psychedelic underground, Paradise 9 could easily be considered one of its earliest chapters. Formed in 1997 by Gregg McKella (for me personally, Paradise 9 were the first door that opened onto Brighton's wider psychedelic universe through my contact with Gregg during the early MySpace years, though probably everything started back in 2007 where I interviewed Gary ‘Roscoe’ Murphy of the legendary Mike Stuart Span/Leviathan for TimeMaZine Issue #2), the band emerged from the late '90s British underground with a vision that connected the cosmic explorations of Psychedelic Rock and Space Rock with elements of Progressive Rock, Proto-Punk and Post-Punk. The result was a sound that looked back to the adventurous spirit of the late '60s and early '70s while remaining firmly rooted in the alternative underground of its own era.

At the heart of Paradise 9 was (/is) Gregg McKella (vocals, guitar, glissando guitar, clarinet and space effects), alongside Tyrone Thomas (lead guitar and backing vocals), Neil Matthars (bass) and Wayne Collyer (drums). Together, they created a distinctive sonic universe built around hypnotic rhythms, atmospheric guitars, surreal textures and powerful live performances. Inspired by artists such as Pink Floyd, Gong, and Hawkwind, yet never content with simple nostalgia, Paradise 9 forged their own identity through a series of releases that charted an ever-evolving musical journey: Showtime (1998), Take Me To The Future (2013), Live at The Amersham Arms SheepDog Bash (2015), 20th Anniversary 1997–2017 Live CD (2017), Deconstruct – Divide And Rule (2019), Behind This Mask (2020), These Are The Days (2021), and Science Fiction Reality (2024), alongside several EPs.

Within Brighton's Psych Ecosystem, Paradise 9 represent one of the essential connecting points between the underground traditions of the past and the vibrant psychedelic community that followed. More than simply another Brighton band, they helped establish the adventurous spirit of a scene where experimentation, imagination and independence continue to thrive.

Sunlight Service Group
Where experimentation became a way of thinking rather than simply a musical direction

If Paradise 9 represent one of the earliest roots of Brighton's modern psychedelic underground, then Sunlight Service Group belong to the next generation of artists who helped shape the city's renewed psychedelic identity during the 2010s. Formed around the creative vision of Will Robinson (guitar, vocals, harmonica and production), the Brighton-based band embraced the adventurous spirit of the late '60s and early '70s while transforming those influences into something entirely personal and contemporary. Psychedelic Rock, Krautrock, Garage, Folk, Space Rock, and Progressive Rock collided freely within a colourful musical universe driven by unusual arrangements, hypnotic rhythms, surreal humour and a fearless DIY philosophy.

Their debut album, Bowling With The Bloodied Head Of Barbra Streisand (2012), immediately established the group as one of the most intriguing voices within the British psychedelic underground. A cult favourite among collectors, it revealed a band equally inspired by the Canterbury scene, the experimental side of the '60s counterculture and the limitless possibilities of modern Psychedelia. They continued their journey with The Magical Christmas EP (2013), The Untold Story Of The Sunlight Service Group (2014) and Banned From The Roxy (2016), each release expanding their unique blend of Psychedelia, Prog, Folk and experimental music while reinforcing their reputation as one of Brighton's most imaginative underground acts.

Within Brighton's Psych Ecosystem, Sunlight Service Group represent the idea that Psychedelia is not simply a musical direction, but a creative philosophy. Through Will Robinson's later involvement with Melt Plastic Group, they became one of the genuine links connecting different generations of local musicians and creative ideas.

The Decadent Dayze
The colourful storytellers of Brighton's Psych community

Following the first waves of Brighton's modern psychedelic revival, The Decadent Dayze emerged in 2014 as another fascinating expression of the city's independent and imaginative spirit. Formed by Lewis Aslan, the band quickly developed a distinctive identity built around a colourful blend of Psychedelic Rock, Garage Rock, Folk, and Indie Rock. Their music combines melodic songwriting with a strong sense of storytelling, creating songs where imagination, atmosphere and playful eccentricity exist side by side.

The core line-up consists of Lewis Aslan (guitar and vocals), Sean Atkinson (drums and backing vocals), Chris Marks-Billson (bass) and Tristian Watson-O'Brien (keyboards). Their discography includes The Sun Burnt My Eyes, These Are Decadent Dayze, Aurora (2021), Nine Maidens (2024) and the four-track release 3, 6, 9, I've Got Time (2024). The latter expanded their musical universe through songs inspired by stone circles, ghosts and mysterious landscapes, while also featuring Gregg McKella of Paradise 9 on clarinet—another subtle but meaningful connection within Brighton's wider psychedelic network.

Within Brighton's Psych Ecosystem, The Decadent Dayze represent the colourful and human side of contemporary Psychedelia. They have created a sound that moves effortlessly between dreamy psychedelic passages, memorable melodies, and adventurous arrangements, reflecting the spirit of Britain's underground traditions where experimentation and emotion naturally coexist.

Blue Spectre
Where Surf Rock, Psychedelia, and cinematic imagination meet

Among the many different faces of Brighton's contemporary underground, Blue Spectre represent one of the most distinctive instrumental voices within the city's psych ecosystem. Emerging during the mid-2010s, the band developed a unique sound where Surf Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Garage Rock, Spaghetti Western atmospheres, and experimental music merge into evocative, cinematic compositions. Without relying on vocals and with the classic instrumental format, Blue Spectre explores the meeting point between the raw energy of Surf Rock and the limitless possibilities of Psychedelic experimentation. Their recorded journey began with the Sadie Strange EP (2014), followed by We Were Strangers (2015), Haaf Soul (2019), Things Fall Apart, Silverscreen (2022), and later Gut Surfin' (2025).

Within Brighton's Psych Ecosystem, Blue Spectre represent the cinematic and instrumental side of Psychedelia. Their music carries echoes of the great instrumental traditions of the past, from the pioneering surf sounds of the '60s to the more adventurous side of underground rock, while adding a contemporary perspective of their own.

Wax Machine
Proof that Brighton's Psychedelia speaks a truly international language

Emerging from Brighton's fertile underground during the late 2010s, Wax Machine represent one of the most distinctive and internationally inspired expressions of the city's contemporary psychedelic movement. Built around the creative vision of Lau Ro (vocals, guitar, songwriting and production), the band developed a unique sonic identity where Psychedelic Folk, Krautrock, Spiritual Jazz, Tropicália, Progressive Rock and experimental music merge into a deeply atmospheric and organic experience. Born in Brazil and shaped by a life between different cultures before eventually settling in Brighton, Lau Ro brought a truly global perspective to the band's music.

Together with collaborators such as Isobel Jones (flute and vocals) and Toma Sapir (drums, percussion and synths/samples), Wax Machine connects the British underground tradition with Brazilian Tropicalia, world music and the spiritual side of the late '60s and '70s experimental scene, creating something both familiar and completely their own. Their recorded journey began with the EPs Harlequin's Patchwork (2017), The This and Mind Palace (2018), followed by the debut album Earthsong of Silence (2020), a remarkable statement that established Wax Machine as one of the most interesting voices in modern Psychedelic Folk. They continued to expand their musical world with Hermit's Grove (2022), a more intimate exploration of Lau Ro's Brazilian heritage and Tropicalia influences, and The Sky Unfurls, The Dance Goes On (2023), which moved further into ambient, folk and experimental territories.

Within Brighton's Psych Ecosystem, Wax Machine represent the spiritual and international dimension of the scene. Their music proves that Psychedelia has never been limited by geography, but has always been a constantly evolving language capable of absorbing different cultures, traditions and personal experiences.

School Disco
The explorers of Brighton's cosmic and Kraut-inspired horizons

Emerging from Brighton's underground during the mid-2010s, School Disco represent one of the most adventurous and exploratory sides of the city's contemporary psychedelic movement. The band was formed in 2016 by Rory Lethbridge, Troy Holt, and Laur Underwood, later expanding into a four-piece with the addition of Will Palmer. Drawing from the experimental spirit of the late '60s and '70s, they embrace the motorik rhythms of German Krautrock, the cosmic visions of Space Rock pioneers and the adventurous side of Progressive music.

Their discography includes Look To The Sky (2017), School Disco (2018), Heads Still Here (2020), Denton Rock (2022) and SDIV (2024), with each release revealing a band willing to push their sound into new territories while maintaining their distinctive identity. Their live performances have also become an essential part of their reputation, allowing their hypnotic and expansive compositions to fully develop into immersive sonic experiences.

Within Brighton's Psych Ecosystem, School Disco represent the cosmic and experimental edge of the scene. Their expansive compositions continue the tradition of artists who view Psychedelia as a journey of exploration, where repetition, atmosphere and imagination open endless possibilities.
