Fruits de Mer followers share some of their favourite tracks - covers, originals, old, new - almost all of them overlooked by most music fans; they all received a vote of approval from at least one 'friend of the fish' - now you can enjoy them
i. HANIA RANI - HELLO ii. KRAAN - VOLGAS AHOI iii. NORTH SEA RADIO ORCHESTRA - SEA SONG iv. COS - VIVA BOMA
i. for Jonathan Elgol, the track is special because of its hypnotic rhythm and melody. Hania mainly plays piano, as well as synths and sings too. It sounds very dreamy and Nordic.
ii. from Graham Jenkins
iii. a Robert Wyatt song, from David Kunzets
IV. another Graham Jenkins recommendation - Belgian/Canterbury, from 1976

i. JONATHAN ELGOL - ON SEACLIFF BEACH ii. WARRINGTON-RUNCORN NEW TOWN DEVELOPMENT PLAN - A SHARED SENSE OF PURPOSE iii. THE GENTRYS - CINNAMON GIRL iv. BANDICOOT - FUZZY
i. This track is actually BY Jonathan Elgol "inspired by the beautiful Seacliff Beach near North Berwick, Scotland. It's such a calming but dramatic place. When you're there, all you can think about is that moment and being there"
ii. from Jonathan Maddock "The track is representative of his music and reflects the failed optimism behind building new towns in the Early '70's. It means a lot to me because I lived in Runcorn at that time. We were promised so much with the New Town being built in the fields around our small town. In the end, the new futuristic concrete built environment brought with it poverty, social disruption and disappointment. We were cheated"
iii. Two from Andy Pernet, starting with a version of Neil Young's 'Cinnamon Girl'
IV. ...followed by a Welsh band, who split up before their album was released

i. EKO & VINDA FOLIO - THERAPY ii. JAPANESE BREAKFAST - DIVING WOMAN iii. REN WATER - SPIRAL END iv. ROYALS - HIGH
i.Stuart Hamilton explains, "The fact that I'm still playing this record, six years after release gives it special status, straight away. The fact that I have no idea what they're singing about yet still play it, gives it special status.
The weird, driving bass line that sounds like it belongs to a completely different song, gives it special status. The blissful jangly dream pop guitar part gives it special status. I have never investigated what or who they are, beyond knowing they're, allegedly, a controversial Georgian post punk duo, who are probably being very mucky in their own language. Apologies to any Georgian speakers who may be offended"
ii. Paul Beard recommends, " a great krautrock beat and some lovely reverb and feedback from the two guitar players. There are two versions on YouTube - one the studio track and a version live on KEXP which really shows the track off to great effect"
iii. "Spiral End summarizes the texture of Ren's album, there’s Psychedelic Rock, Space Rock, Progressive Rock, Art Rock, and even some Medieval Poppy Dream-a-delia. It gives you the feel that you are inside Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights" - Timelord Michalis
IV. from Ari Holpainen

i. RAW MATERIAL - TIME & ILLUSION ii. PALADIN - BAD TIMES iii. THE KINKS - RATS iv. TIR NA NOG - WOODSTOCK
i. Paul Harman saw the band supporting Black Sabbath (pre Paranoid) in a small club in Romford sometime in 1970
ii. Steve Kelly recommends as a lovely mix of Santana / Malo latinesque inflections and some corking organ; it gradually builds in intensity before reaching a fiery climax.
iii. Glenda Pescado says, " Apeman was the first single I bought and this was the B-side! It blew me away, I’d never heard anything like it! It was 1970 I think so I would have been 9yrs old! An eye-opener to say the least"
