How did VOD begin?
We started organising Record Fairs in North East Wales back in 2006 , 3 years later we opened a Record shop in our hometown (Mold) which in 2015 was given the 'Smallest Record shop in the UK' title, after 15 happy years there we moved to a new shop (only next door but one) which offers more space and with it greater scope whilst retaining the feel of the old shop.
Who's in charge?
Me - Colin Trueman
How did you get involved in the first place?
To fulfil a lifelong dream and step out of the 'real world' of employment
What do you specialise in?
Vinyl,CDs - All forms of rock, electronic, krautock, reggae ,punk and indie....no pop, easy listening!! We also stock hi-fi products, cleaning accessories and are a Rega stockist. Most importantly we have stocked FdM for many years and now have a dedicated section.
Do you trade on-line?
We have a website shop but mainly for reserve and collect although we will ship out, we just don't over advertise this fact. Meeting people and chatting is the main focus for the shop.
How has your shop changed since vinyl made a comeback?
Originally in 2009 we were exclusively used vinyl but as things have evolved over time and we now stock more new vinyl while retaining a decent used section.
Can you describe your typical customer?
We have so many really loyal customers as do most independent Record shops and this has been vital to the longevity of the shop. Musically we cover most areas our customers are interested in.There is also a new younger audience buying vinyl which is so refreshing.
Your favourite band?
Although there is so much great new music which I love, basecamp for me has always been Van der Graaf Generator and Peter Hammill.
How to you see the next two or three years for the shop?
Growing organically into our new shop and offering things that were not possible previously.
Do you take part in Record Store Day?
Absolutely, our first RSD was 2010 and we have participated ever since (we also do RSD Black Friday). We make a day of it in the town with a Record Fair, Live music...for many it is the highlight of the 'indie shop' year.
Any moments you've had in the shop you'd like to share?
So many and not all about fame, each day brings a tale its a joy to run a Record Shop.
Do you have instore/signings?
Well, it was difficult (but not impossible) in our small shop but now we can look to this as something we can do more of in the future. Matt Deighton (Mother Earth) played on our opening night with a shop full of music lovers, a special memory (see photo below)
