Crystal Jacqueline

a Dale Simpson special

Crystal Jacqueline makes her first appearance on Fruits de Mer Records with a three-track 7" of sixties psych-tinged covers:

Cousin Jane (Wright/Page - The Troggs)
Play With Fire (Jagger, Richards, Watts, Wyman, Jones - The Rolling Stones!)
A Fairy Tale (Ken Elliott - the wonderful Second Hand)

Crystal Jacqueline is new to the Fruits de Mer label but - ably assisted and orchestrated on this three-track 7” by Icarus Peel (with whom she also plays in the band The Honey Pot) – she has a way with sixties psychedelia: from the dark & twisted to pure, driving psych.

She takes two songs that I’ve been waiting for someone to cover since Fruits de Mer was still a winkle in someone’s eye – The Troggs’ disturbed and disturbing ‘Cousin Jane’ and the long-lost Second Hand’s 1968 classic ‘A Fairy Tale’ - and adds a carefully-crafted ‘Play With Fire’, previously recorded by the little-known rock combo, The Rolling Stones.

If you’re wondering whether female vocals work on ‘Cousin Jane’, well… Jane is in for even more than she bargained for with Crystal Jacqueline around than when the late, great Reg Presley was climbing the stairs, while Crystal and Icarus create a driving slice of freakbeat out of the massively underrated Second Hand’s song, ‘A Fairy Tale’, which is surely one of the finest slices of 60s psychedelia ever recorded and was long-overdue a revisit.

Here's Crystal's video to 'Cousin Jane'...
